EnLace (Leadership and Civic Engagement)

A Good Idea

Description

Through an eight-week course of two-hour weekly modules, participants connect with county and city staff to learn about local governments systems and how programs and policies impact the social determinants of health and health outcomes. enLACE, offered throughout Monterey County, brings the program to the local community.

Goal / Mission

In an effort to prepare and engage community residents to take a more participatory role in their communities, Monterey County Health Department (MCHD) developed and has offered since 2014 a leadership and civic engagement program (enLACE) that addresses the social determinants of health, community engagement and their relationship to the health of the community.

Results / Accomplishments

enLACE has resulted in a space for community members to connect with each other and with their community leaders in regard to local health and wellness. Community leaders and community members alike see the value and importance of such a program as reflected by a Salinas community member “I now look at my community through different eyes than before being part of enLACE. The environment we live in has a lot to do with how you feel.”
