Safe Walk to School

A Good Idea

Description

Safe Walk to School promotes getting children to and from school safely with tips for parents and children, and safety patrols at schools. The program works with partners, including the Oakland Police Department, the Office of Parks and Recreation, and the Oakland Unified School District, to determine which neighborhoods and schools can be served by the program. Selection is based on the severity of safety issues near elementary and middle schools and Community Development Block Grant funding appropriations.

Goal / Mission

Safe Walk to School's goal is to keep children walking to school safe.

Results / Accomplishments

Safe Walk to School monitors school sites, performs crossing guard duties, and patrols neighborhoods before and after school to ensure safety. Safe Walk to School also helps set up volunteer safety patrols for schools.
