A Good Idea

Description

Project Access is an organized system of healthcare delivery provided at no charge to eligible individuals by specialized healthcare practitioners and service organizations such as hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies.
In addition to coordinating healthcare services, Project Access facilitates transportation to and from appointments; assists indviduals with obtaining low-cost prescriptions and medical equipment; arranges for interpreters; follows up with patients to ensure compliance with treatment; and when needed refers individuals to food assistance, mental health counseling and other support services.

Goal / Mission

Project Access Durham County seeks to provide comprehensive healthcare to low-income, uninsured individuals residing in the county for at least six months.

Results / Accomplishments

In the first year of implementation, Project Access secured over $800,000 in donor funds as well as 2,800 episodes of care (such as appointments and lab tests) donated by cardiologists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, gynecologists, surgeons, urologists and other specialists.
As of February 2009, Project Access had enrolled 460 patients who received 573 episodes of care by these specialists.
