Health Equity Champions: Resource Library Module 2

Starting in 2020, Prince George’s County Health Equity Workgroup (HEW) in partnership with the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Think Tank created an interactive curriculum for Prince George’s County residents to learn more about health equity advocacy through Health in All Policies. The following resources have been identified by Workgroup partners as a starting point for Prince Georgians in ongoing learning and reflection of equity in Prince George’s County.

Module 1: Introduction to Health Equity

Health Equity Vocabulary:
Prince George’s County Health Department and the Prince George's Healthcare Action Coalition are committed to health equity. Below is a list of vocabulary to familiarize yourself with before we explore other tools and resources to assist you as you champion for health equity. 

Health Equality:

Health Equality: Everyone has the same opportunities to care. Examples include a community center offering free or low-cost checkups to everyone.

Health Equity:

Health Equity: People have specific opportunities based on their needs, focusing on social justice - providing people who are disadvantaged with assistance to access more resources. An example may be the community center charging people based on their ability to pay. A person who cannot afford care may receive it for free while another person may pay for the same care if they can pay.

Health Disparity:

Health Disparity: A difference that affects a person’s ability to achieve their best health. Examples of health disparities include race, gender, education, employment, income, disability, geographic location, food insecurity, and sexual orientation.

Social Determinants of Health:

Social Determinants of Health: Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

Module 2: Quality Health Information

Health Literacy Vocabulary:
Below is a list of vocabulary related to "Quality Health Information" to familiarize yourself with before we explore other tools and resources to assist you as you champion for health equity. 
Healthy People 2030 describes health literacy with two areas of focus: organizational health literacy and personal health literacy. Read more about how health literacy is related to health equity in Healthy People 2030’s National Goals and Objectives: Health Literacy - Healthy People 2030 | health.gov

Organizational Health Literacy:

Organizational Health Literacy: The degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.

Personal Health Literacy:

Personal Health Literacy: The degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.

Plain Language:

Plain Language: Grammatically correct language that includes complete sentence structure and accurate word usage. Plain language is not unprofessional writing or a method of "dumbing down" or "talking down" to the reader.
 

Cultural Humility

Cultural Humility: Active engagement in an ongoing process of self-reflection that informs deeper understanding and respect of cultural differences. Increased cultural humility can lead to behaviors, programs, policies, practices, and services that are more culturally appropriate.
