Child Mortality Rate: Under 20

This indicator shows the mortality rate among people under age 20 per 100,000.

Why is this important?

Child mortality is a core indicator for children's health and well being. Losing a child not only affects immediate families, but the broader community as well. Since more than one third of all child deaths occur within the first month of life according to the World Health Organization (WHO), providing skilled care to mothers during pregnancy, during birth, and after birth greatly contributes to child survival. The leading causes of death among infants are birth defects, preterm delivery, low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and maternal complications during pregnancy.
