Teens who do not Eat Vegetables: High School Students

This indicator shows the percentage of high school students who do not eat vegetables during the past seven days.

Why is this important?

It is essential to eat a fresh, healthy and balanced diet in order to optimize weight and prevent chronic disease. Numerous studies have shown a clear link between the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables consumed and rates of chronic diseases, especially cancer. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, about one third of all cancers can be prevented through a nutritious diet that includes fruits and vegetables, physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends making healthy daily food choices that include fruits and vegetables, although the recommended daily amounts depend on age, sex, and level of physical activity. Despite the benefits, many people still do not eat recommended levels of fruits and vegetables.This is particularly true of consumers with lower incomes and education levels.
